The Chickenburger Is No Spring Chicken!
Canada’s Oldest Drive-In Diner celebrates 70 years with launch of new book, “The Life and Times of The Chickenburger”
(Halifax, Nova Scotia) –– On March 10th, 1940 The Chickenburger opened its doors and canteen windows on the Bedford Highway and began a flourishing, reciprocal relationship with its customers. Seventy years later, it remains an iconic landmark in the community. Now, to pay homage to the family that built the iconic restaurant, the memoirs of founder, Bernice Innes, are depicted in a new book entitled, “The Life and Times of The Chickenburger.”
The Chickenburger started as a drive-up canteen in 1940 by Bernice and Jack Innes. Over the years, the famous landmark was a destination for families and friends alike. Started in wartime era, The Chickenburger has many fond memories for Mrs. Innes, who shares her story penned by local author Eleanor Beaton.
The book tells a tale of sacrifice, family, commitment, community and above all, passion. In an excerpt from the book, she describes it best: ‘…when the fresh-faced Mrs. Innes went to wake up the girls in the ‘Chic Inn’—the boarding house where the waitresses bunked for the summer—she frequently found the beds made, and the girls still out partying. “I married so many people off you wouldn’t believe,” she says, laughing at the memory.’
In 2007, the Innes family bid farewell to a lifelong friend affectionately called The Chick. The former owners of The Chickenburger hung up their hats and handed over the keys to another family business, Micco Companies, owned by Mickey MacDonald.
“The Chickenburger began with the desire to build relationships with everyone that comes through the doors. I’m very humbled that I was able to be chosen by the Innes’ to carry on the stewardship of the business and to carry on its legacy," said MacDonald. "Many of those relationships grew into friendships. And, it is my personal hope that the new book helps share those memories with those who consider The Chickenburger an old friend," he said.
The Chickenburger is a Canadian gem. Noted to be the oldest drive-in diner in Canada, it has been a meeting place for friends and family alike throughout the decades. The book shares the stories over the seven decades, and includes photos from throughout the years.
The Limited Edition book, “The Life and Times of The Chickenburger” is available in-store at The Chickenburger. Priced at $9.99, all proceeds from the book will be donated to Palooka’s Boxing Club and to Cancer Research in Memory of Jack A. Innes.
